Most people might think that they don’t
communicate any different from one culture to the next. But have you ever paid
attention to see if you do or don’t. For me I know that I communicate different
from one culture to the next, sometimes without realizing I’m doing it. My
husband is an Asian and his cutler is Hmong. My husband and his brothers and
sisters speak both American and Hmong. Where his parents are only fluent in their
native language (Hmong), this is very command among the elders. For most of
them can understand English, but are just unable to speak English very well.
When I am communicating with his parent or an elder I tend to slow down how
fast I speak so they have a better understanding what I’m saying. I also speak
slower so if they don’t understand a word they can ask what it means. I also
use more facial expressions with the communication so they are easier to read
than some language. I also use my hands more to express something or to show
them something. In the beginning of interacting with his parents made me
worried and supper shy. It also took me a while to understand their religion,
gender standers and accepting there difference from how I was raised as a
child. As of today I have learned a lot about their culture, the way they do
thing and to understand and respect their culture.
The more I learn about
communication the better I can do to communicate better with everyone around
me. Some things that I have learned already is when you have a large gap
between cultures its more affective to ask as many question possible in ensuring
you completely understand what they are stating. You also want to rephrase what
they are telling you so you can make sure you’re getting in information
correct, but also so they know as well that you understand what was said. You
just won $100.00 and you want to express to someone from another culture your
amazing news. Before you do, you might want to learn more about someone culture
so you don’t offend them. Not every culture expresses the same way as you were
raised. By knowing this information you are able to express what you want in
the correct way within their culture.
